Antalya, which means ‘Home of Attalos’, was founded by Attalos II. With the end of the Pergamon Kingdom (133 BC), the city remained independent for a while and then fell into the hands of pirates. In 77 BC, it was annexed to Roman territory by Commander Servilius Isauricus. It became a base for Pompeius' navy in 67 BC. In 130 AD, Hadrian's visit to Attaleia led to the development of the city. Attaleia, which was a bishopric centre during the Byzantine rule, showed a great development after it was taken over by the Turks. Since the modern city was built on the ancient settlement, there are very few remains of antiquity in Antalya. The first of the ruins that can be seen is a part of the harbour breakwater, which is described as the old harbour, and the city wall surrounding the harbour. Hadrian's Gate, which has been restored in the part of the city walls outside the park, is one of the most beautiful ancient monuments of Antalya.
